17 Bioclimatic School Units

Contractor: Consortium MYTILINEOS S.A. – ATESE S.A.

Project Scope: The scope of the project includes the design, financing, construction, maintenance and facilities management of seventeen (17) new School Units in the Region of Central Macedonia through a PPP scheme. Brief information on the schools to be housed in the new buildings, as well as their indicative surface area can be found in the table here.

Contract duration: The total duration of the Partnership Agreement is 27 years. The first two concern the construction period, while the period of operation and maintenance of the school units ends at 25 years.

Project Advantages

  • Students will have the opportunity to study in state-of-the-art buildings with bioclimatic design in which their roofs have photovoltaic panels for energy production and electricity saving, thermal insulation and sound-absorbing membranes on floors, sound blocking and finger protection on doors, soundproof and heat-insulating windows, automation in lighting, heating and ventilation and other electro-mechanical equipment that even has the possibility of remote control through the BMS system.
  • In all school units there will be multipurpose halls in which a special study has been made for acoustics, and they will be equipped with state-of-the-art projection rooms with sound consoles, microphone installations and projectors that can be used for a variety of artistic and sporting activities.

Innovative Bioclimatic Actions

The implementation of innovative bioclimatic actions and modern automations in the new school facilities serves the following main objectives:

  • Energy saving through “smart” lighting systems
  • Power generation using non-polluting methods, e.g. photovoltaic systems. It is estimated that the benefit from these systems for the entire period of services will exceed 5,000 tons of greenhouse gases, while more than 20 GWh of energy will have been generated.
  • Saving water resources by collecting, storing and re-using rainwater in grey water networks
  • Ensuring thermal comfort conditions by minimizing heat losses and cooling/heating costs
  • Installation of natural cooling and ventilation systems and operation of ventilation connected to CO2 sensors in each class
  • Central Building Management System (BMS) installation
  • Increase of the green space percentage in public areas
  • Environmental awareness of students on issues such as ecology, recycling, RES, and energy saving
